St. Vincent: A Very Prayerful Place

I can remember one of the first times flying into St. Vincent. All I have to say is the flights in and out of there are very prayerful flights. You pray that even though all you see out of your window is water, there has to be a landing strip somewhere and the pilot will reach it. You also pray when you're leaving, because you hope that the plane doesn't run out of runway to get lift off (especially since you know that people's suitcases are overweight and full of food and fish).

Then there is the weekly or bi-weekly cargo flight. A very large 727 that has to take off in the opposite direction. This time the people praying are the folks living in the hills because all they can see as they sit on their verandas is a very large plane coming towards them. They used to have to raise and lower a bamboo gate across the road because the runway wasn't long enough. They have since rectified this. The good news is that St. Vincent is building a new airport... hopefully it will be big enough to handle bigger planes.
